If we’re just talking consumption, maple syrup is what I’d rather eat, no question, but that’s largely because I really like breakfast food. And the end of the day, though, I like the cultural footprint of honey better. From beehives to hunnypots, honey is just cooler than syrup.
Also, I think milk feels left out of this fight.
Buckets on trees aren’t cool enough for you? 🙂 I like maple syrup better too. The last time I ate honey it made me feel ooky. I think honey was ruined for me the day I tried it in hot tea. When I was a kid, there was a hornets nest that got sprayed down with hornet killer and was in the garage. That soggy hornets nest smelled exactly like honey in hot tea. Or vice versa. I wiill never drink honey in tea if I can avoid it. I never tried maple syrup in tea, but I bet it’s fine. I do like baklava.
Honey is good and I go through a lot of it, via my daily plain yogurt. Standard yogurt is too sugary, I like the plain greek stuff with just enough sweetening–honey–to cut the sourness. But I’ll take any honey, the flavor differences are not enough to provoke any preferences for me. I’ll buy whatever is less expensive. I do like that they make honey containers as delightful bear or beehive shapes.
Syrup has grades and I have opinions on them. (Worth noting they implemented a revised grading system in the last decade that gets away from A-B-C value judgements at the cost of being more confusing–now they are all A and are more like categories.) I like the dark stuff. The lighter is hardly worth it. There are fancier syrups, syrups with fruit, syrups with booze. Warmed syrup is magic.
All that said, in my heart I’m a syrup guy but I live a honey reality. I have simply aged out of syrup. These days I feel better if I have a good protein-based breakfast with yogurt (with honey) than, e.g., pancakes (with syrup).
Out of curiosity, have you tried syrup in yogurt? I wonder how that would be.
